Krauthammer and Krugman on 9/11
Paul Krugman is an American economist, Princeton University professor and Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics recipient. Charles Krauthammer is a Pulitizer prize-winning syndicated columnist, political commentator, and physician. Two very bright men. One of them wrote a factually researched, well-substantiated, thought provoking column on the tenth year anniversary of the terrorist attacks perpetrated on September 11, 2001. The other threw a schoolyard bully’s punch and then left the playground before anyone else could respond.
The former was Charles Krauthammer.  The latter, Paul Krugman, tempts me to give his “column†no time at all. However, in Mr. Krugman’s judgmental name calling and accusations, he teaches us much about what’s wrong with the world and why we have found ourselves so far from who we want to be.
Mr. Krauthammer’s column in the National Review On-line recaps the U.S. response and successes in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He also factually disproves allegations that the War on Terror is the basis for our current financial difficulties and places the blame where it belongs. Finally, he gives us pride in our national determination and endurance in the face of adversity.
As for Mr. Krugman… he used his bully pulpit to bully. He accused former President George W. Bush and former New York Mayor Rudy Guilaini of “cash[ing] in on the horror†and unnamed others of “hijacking [of] the atrocity.†He actually goes so far as to call the memory of 9/11 “an occasion of shame.†Mr. Krugman’s opinion piece is a lesson in turning the victim into the perpetrator… in deflecting responsibility from where it rightfully belongs. He offers no facts, piously judges others, and tries to make us feel badly about ourselves as a nation. Let’s learn from his mistakes.
1. Conclusions should be based upon facts, not conjecture.
2. Judgment belongs to Our Creator and when exercised by humankind separates and alienates us from ourselves and one another.
3. Giving others confidence and hope, not criticism and despair, is the answer to both personal and collective growth.
Mr. Krauthammer’s column allows for posting comments. Mr. Krugman’s does not. Deliberately so. He noted that he was not permitting comments “for obvious reasons.†What is obvious to me may be different from what he intended. I post here the email I sent him following a read of his column:
“If you are going to make the kind of judgments and bold statements made in the NY Times Opinion piece ‘The Years of Shame,’ have the courage to allow those who see the world differently from you the courtesy of access to reply. Free speech, I presume, is one of the founding principles upon which we can agree. What follows that principle in a free society is the battlefield of ideas.
The only thing that is ‘obvious’ about why you would have precluded responses to the piece is your need to strike while insulating yourself from the counter-punch. This was not a courageous act. Being able to take the heat, not just give it, is the sign of a confident individual committed to, above all, the truth.â€
Irene’s Lesson
Yes, it would be easy (and I suspect welcome) to blast the media and politicians for the hurricane Irene hype in light of the ultimate reality. Should I be misunderstood, allow me to say from the outset here that loss of even one life and obvious property damage is not to be demeaned or dismissed. They are both events that will evoke sadness and necessitate prolonged recovery.
This is about our reaction to the hype.
While its never easy to gauge, in advance, the potential damage from a hurricane such as the size of Irene, the technology available to us now to disseminate information makes it not only possible to spread good news but bad news as well. Not to mention fear… and spread fear they did. Then we helped by allowing fear to run away with us.
I saw people stocking up on perishables, such as eggs and milk, when the projection was for the loss of electricity. Hello? I also saw people, literally, walking in circles in supermarkets and box stores who had no idea what to buy. They were simply following a line of thinking initiated by former President George W. Bush following the 911 attacks: Support the economy. As if accumulating more material things could somehow stave off disaster or provide protection.
Then there were those people who refused to participate. At least they refused to participate in the fear. Bravo for them.
I’d like to believe I fell somewhere in the middle. I shopped for some extra canned food; made sure I had batteries for my flashlights and radio, and secured my basement windows from possible overflow flooding. Then I kicked back and got on with life. So while I had respect for Nature’s power, I didn’t have much for the media or the politicians.
I think it’s the choice to come from one’s lower self or Higher Self.  Fear is the great manipulative tool used for centuries by those in positions of power. Unfortunately, we have become so accustomed to re-acting to it that we fail to act from a place of thoughtful reflection and focus.
In Judaism, the holiday of Sukkot is one wherein Jews build a temporary shelter, or “sukkah†in which they are commanded to eat their meals and sleep for the duration of the holiday. Why?  As a reminder that for 40 years, against all odds and in the total absence of all things material, they wandered safely through the desert and survived.
To remember protection comes from God.
So, I think Irene has been instructive and if we are wise we will learn accordingly.
- The media prospers on fear.
- The politicians cover their rears.
- We are manipulated by fear.
- Reacting is not productive or helpful.
- Our Higher Selves will guide us in the right direction.
- God takes care of the rest.
Also, let each of us reach out with some form of assistance to anyone who suffered loss from Irene.
That, too, is our Higher Selves.
Glenn Beck’s Vision
Today I watched Part 1 of Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Courage†rally in Israel. Before I tell you anything more, in respect of full disclosure, I’ve got a dog in this hunt. I’m a Jew.
As such, you can infer whatever you like about any bias in my observations;  however, I’m much more a mystic than I am a religious person so any bias you may think I bring is more likely your own. It is sort of like me telling you I grew up in the 60’s, a Jewish, suburban, upper middle class girl and you assuming I’m a feminist, a Liberal and a Democrat. Sorry, I never got feminism, am somewhat politically conservative and a registered Independent. See. You’d have made that mistaken assumption, too!
So, now that we can set aside all that potential rush to judgment, back to Glenn Beck and Israel.
In April of 2011, I wrote a blog post in which I referred to Mr. Beck as, perhaps, a prophet of sorts. At the time, I clarified that I didn’t necessarily mean it in the biblical sense.  Now I wonder.
Moses gave the Israelites the vision and courage to leave behind a world they knew ( an oppressive one albeit with certain creature comforts) to head out into the unknown. It was, as almost no one would dispute, a turning point for humankind.
Glenn Beck has also provided millions (my estimate) with a vision and the courage to leave behind, if not literally then figuratively, a world they know and head into equally unknown territory. In this instance, what is being left behind is not so different than what the Israelites relinquished.
We, like the Israelites of ancient Egypt, became enslaved to materialism. To having our physical needs and wants reasonably met while losing sight of our spiritual ones. We too, established false idols…Alan Greenspan, various political leaders, the U.S. dollar. But with the passage of time, we came to remember that while golden calves glitter, the glare is temporary and blinding. In that blindness, we yearned for something more, something lasting, and something real.
Enter Glenn Beck.
Mr. Beck is a visionary (I’m still mulling over the word prophet). He saw where we were, where we needed to go, and he said, “Okay, if I can see it, I guess I have to lead the way.†Like all true leaders, he has been a reluctant one. For that he will surely be rewarded when and how it counts…whether or not we appropriately acknowledge our gratitude for his foresight and willingness to serve.
Glenn Beck is shining a light upon the Light that is Israel. He and others regardless of religious affiliation, who are connected to Source in their hearts, know one of the most important messages Moses reminds us in Deuteronomy: When the Jewish People are exiled from the land, not just the land suffers but the whole world suffers.
With the reestablishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the world began an unprecedented economic and technological expansion. During that same period, the world lost its spiritual and moral compass. Those two realities have led us to this moment in time when the dark forces of the world want to annihilate the State of Israel to once and forever drive the Jews from their land.
Glenn Beck saw this convergence on the horizon but more importantly, he has done something to impede its design. The world would do well to heed the message he brings and, if it’s not too much to ask, to also thank the messenger.
Permit me my moment.
Thank you Glenn Beck.
Who Is Howard Schultz?
Howard Schultz is brilliant and courageous.Â
Don’t know who he is, you say? Read on.
Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz, recently suggested that we suspend all contributions to political candidates and politicians generally until they address the deficit and begin to do the People’s business for which they are elected. His suggestion has taken root. Just today, both Duncan Niederauer, head of the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ CEO Bob Greifeld have joined in support and are encouraging other CEO’s to do the same.
If you’re not a CEO don’t fret. I’m not and I’m on board because I know a good idea when I hear one.
For too long, and too often, we’ve allowed ourselves to feel powerless to affect issues that seem way beyond the capability of one individual. But one individual can, in fact, turn the world upside down or right side up… depending on their intention. Think Hitler and Jesus Christ.
Your thinking “extraordinary examples†aren’t you? Well, maybe… but you get my point.
Perhaps more to the point, and more relevant to what you can do, is this:
1.      We are all connected, and the action of one of us inevitably influences the outcome for all of us. It’s like the butterfly flapping its wings in New York City whose motion ultimately affects wind patterns in China.
2.      You vote every four (or six) years at the ballot box. However, you vote every day with your money. Money is energy. Where you choose to spend (or not spend) yours is an act of self-definition.
I think Howard Schultz has exhibited leadership at a time when we are in search of such talent. He’s done his part. Now it’s up to all of us who know a good idea when we hear one to do our part.
If memory serves me correctly, President Obama was very proud of his grassroots, social network-based campaign approach that managed to collect millions of dollars from “ordinary citizens†who were moved by his promise of Hope and Change and, who by their individual contributions, made the difference.
See, you matter.  Your money is an expression of what you are willing to support. Withdraw that support now!  Make your contribution (no pun intended) in support of Howard Schultz’s idea.  Say “no more funding†for alleged leaders, of any and all parties, whose word means nothing and who exhibit both a lack of understanding for the People’s will and an unwillingness to perform the job for which they applied.
Just do it. You’ll feel empowered and together… real change is possible.
Debt Ceiling or Phoenix Rising?
As our elected officials continue to struggle with the futility of attempting to apply depleted energies to problem solving rather than embracing spiritually-based, co-creative thinking…each of us must hold onto the core belief that we can directly influence the outcome of unfolding events by how we think, speak and act individually.
It’s my favorite saying: “There is only One of Usâ€
Once you surrender to this concept, choices become clearer.
“Surrender†being the operative word here.
Generally, we are pretty adept at seeking a higher power. It’s surrendering to it when we encounter it that trips us up.  It’s one thing to yearn. Many of us do that in our personal lives. We yearn for relationship…we yearn for a partner…we yearn for love. Then, when we find those things, we spend the rest of our lives resisting surrender to the very thing we sought and, miraculously, found.
We are no different when in search of a Higher Power. Of Source.  Of God.  Of The God Within. We seek and yearn and explore all sorts of avenues to find that connection that will bring us inner peace and give our lives profound meaning. Then, on those occasions when we get a glimpse of such Power, we manufacture all sorts of reasons why it cannot possibly be as we experienced it (a/k/a/ denial) …or… why it just makes more sense to go on our merry way living life as we always have (a/k/a ego- directed).  And so we wind up back where we started and the merry way of the merry-go-round goes… yes…’round and ‘round.
How do we get off this ride?
Surrender!
Surrender does not mean relinquish your individuality. Nor does it mean relinquish power (with a small “pâ€) over creating your best life. Surrender means letting go attachments and outcomes. Instead, leaning to accept and receive what life brings you in each and every moment with certainty that whatever that may be it holds the potential for your highest good. The key to getting there is being fully conscious and fully aware in the present moment so that you can access inner guidance to handle that which is in front of you.
You’d be pleasantly surprised at what you can know when you are present and aware. Knowing is certainty… and certainty creates reality.
So while the politicians fiddle as Rome burns… know that The Phoenix rises from the ashes…and so to shall We… All of us because …wait for it…
There is only One of Us.
Obama, Boehner, and Pelosi Pics
It isn’t that I think that our Representatives…The President, Senators and Congressman… should never be able to smile or enjoy themselves.  It’s just that while unemployment is at 9.2%, 31% of the houses are underwater (the value of the house is less than the outstanding mortgage), and the world is holding its breath awaiting resolution of the U.S. debt ceiling deadline on August 2nd … it’s sort of disconcerting, if not at times infuriating, to see photos on the nightly news, or on major news websites, of all of them sitting in some situation room in the White House smiling.
You know that “good time†I think they are all entitled to …well this isn’t it. And those photos just make me think about how they all have jobs and houses that are not under water…which makes me think they still don’t get it.
How is that possible?
You and I know how difficult and uncertain the economy is. You and I know the future looks fraught with all sorts of problems we definitely didn’t anticipate. You and I know how hard it is each day to care for ourselves and our families…just get through each day, really… while dealing with the stress of worrying about where all of this is headed and what’s in store for us when we get there.
I think it’s possible because they do not, in fact, get it.  And even if they do, they are clearly clueless about what to do about it. Their time is up.
We are headed into new and uncharted territory.  So it’s up to the explorer in each of us to blaze new trails of innovative thinking in our own lives. All change starts with the individual, an individual, actually. That individual may be you…or it could be the child who is watching how you handle change and its accompanying uncertainty.
So as we’re blazing new trails, let’s make two course corrections that our political leaders seem unable to make. First, let’s tell the truth. Always. To ourselves and others no matter how painful. Second, let’s accept responsibility for the seriousness of the situation in which we find ourselves and, if we’re caught smiling on the job, let it be because we’ve figured out how to get ourselves out of this mess.
Glenn Beck and Anthony Weiner: The Takeaway
If you can’t see this one… you are likely overdue for an eye exam.
Within the last year, recently disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) made it his mission to lead a personal assault against Glenn Beck in an attempt to destroy Mr. Beck’s career by undermining his sponsors. In particular, Congressman Weiner accused Beck of an “unholy alliance†with Goldline, alleging the company was a “multimedia rip off†and that Beck was using his radio and television shows to manipulate listeners into investing with the company.
Weiner’s attack was designed to destroy Beck by raising questions, through innuendo, about Beck’s integrity, truthfulness and motives. It turned out there was no factual basis for the Congressman’s allegations and he likely knew there was no such basis when he made them.  The charges faded into oblivion.
The Congressman himself was not so fortunate.
With the now infamous photos of Congressman Weiner and his shameful “sexting†revelations, he has become what he set out inflict upon Beck: a pariah whose integrity is revealed to be nonexistent.
(If you cannot see the Divine aspect and irony of this reversal you need to stop reading and call your optometrist to schedule that eye exam).
I have been listening to Glenn Beck for several years and am certain of a few things as a result. He loves his country, does his homework, is sincere, and is the bearer of Light in a darkened world. I call such people “Lightworkers.â€
It’s a fulltime job with no days off.
Congressman Weiner, by his actions, has demonstrated that he represents the antithesis of what Glenn Beck stands for.  The Congressman, it turns out, is a participant in, and therefore a promoter of, Darkness. Now there’s the real “unholy alliance†in this story.
As with all darkness, the Light shining upon it reveals it for what it is.
Congressman Weiner has inadvertently served his country well. He has, by his actions, given credibility and added strength to Glenn Beck’s purpose and thereby empowered the Light.
In the final analysis, this was a classic and eternal clash of opposing energies. Â It has always been the case and always will be that Light reveals, and thereby transcends, all that is dark.
Final Thoughts on Congressman Weiner et al
It’s the day after, so what can I say about Congressman Anthony Weiner that hasn’t already been said? Well, I’m not certain.  But I have a few “off the beaten track†remarks to make and so will try and put this sordid story to rest here by making them.
1. Those women who participated with the Congressman in sexual references beyond that first “tweet†or Facebook exchange are as culpable as the Congressman, and for them to claim duplicity, victimization or embarrassment is its own shame.
2. Predatory sexual practices, whether male-female (the most notorious), male-male (i.e. the Catholic Church); female-male; female-female or adult -child are reprehensible and speak to the emotional illness, moral depravity and lack of character of the perpetrator.
3. Accepting responsibility for reprehensible behavior, absent a consequence, is an empty gesture with no redeeming value.
4. As adolescent and perverse the Congressman’s sexual preferences and behavior may be, it is his willful and knowing decision to lie and deceive his friends, colleagues, and constituents that make him unfit to hold public office and thereby, public trust.
Every day, each of us is confronted with opportunities to confront or deny behavior in ourselves and others that is the basis for a degenerating society. What we do in these moments is our personal contribution to the world in which we live. If each of us is not ready, willing and able to stand and resist the perpetual lowering of the bar for acceptable behavior, then no politician or bumper sticker will save us from self-imposed and self-selected destruction.
Congressman Weiner is A Symptom
New York Congressman Anthony Weiner apparently has no survival instinct. He is patently self-destructive. Not only did he place at risk both his marriage and his career by blatantly pursuing perverse sexual behavior through the internet and social media sites, but having been exposed (no pun intended,) he exhibits neither remorse nor an inclination to admit to his behavior. He’s in denial… publically at least. Personally, only his humiliated and presumably pained wife knows if he’s in denial privately as well.
Brooklyn Democratic Chairman and power broker Vito Lopez has been quoted as saying “Something like this better be put to rest. If it’s left outstanding, it could have damaging impact, even if it means the difference of 3 or 4 percent of the vote in a very competitive four-way or five-way race” regarding Weiner’s chances in a future mayoral contest.
Is that really the issue? Is the potential damage to Mr. Weiner’s political career what the media…what we… need to be focusing upon?
Given the dire economic straights the economy is suffering and the worldwide propensity for revolution, isn’t this a little reminiscent of how the country handled the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinski revelations? Didn’t we learn anything from that sordid moment? It’s not about the economy, political careers or even the wanton misuse of power.
It’s about how We The People continue to look the other way… in our personal lives and in the lives of public figures when its simply easier and more convenient to do that than confront the reality.
The reality is that as a culture and a society we have so lowered the bar that we barely blink… and are almost never heard…when behavior is demeaning, degrading and socially harmful. So Weiner gets 15 minutes of media focus for his disgusting behavior and our kids are exposed to one more sexual deviant. So everyone laughs when the “F†word is used at the MTV awards and our children are watching and making a mental (even if subconscious) note. So the likes of Schwarzenegger, Strauss-Kahn, and Edwards are momentarily exposed and perhaps embarrassed (I think that requires a conscience and I’m not sure these guys qualify) and then life goes on for us… and further downhill it goes as well.
It’s really up to each of us to begin to examine our own lives and hold not only public figures accountable but ourselves as well. It’s time (actually its almost past available time) when we redefine and restructure our values, our priorities and our tolerance levels for what kind of world we want to create and live in.
Anthony Weiner and deviants like him are symptoms of an ailing culture. We are both the illness and the cure. Which of those we end up cultivating will be determined by the our choices starting now… and the personal responsibility for those choices we are each willing and able to accept.
I Set Before You This Day
Sometimes there’s just no way around the tough stuff. While I realize my credibility will take a hit with the following statement, I none-the-less feel compelled to make it.
You are living in two simultaneous realities. Both are quite real.
In Reality Number One, the world is experiencing unprecedented and widespread change. Social unrest and faltering economies are breaking down and reorganizing for the good of all involved, even if the transition period is fraught with difficulty and endless challenges.  The outcome, however, is a proverbial giant step for humankind.
In Reality Number Two, the world is experiencing unprecedented and widespread change. Social unrest and faltering economies have created a dangerous global environment wherein opportunists, both political and economic, are exerting every effort, and seeking every means, to meld excessive governmental power to personal financial gain for the few at the expense of the many. The outcome will be the destruction of the world as you have known it.
How can this be? How can both be happening at the same time?
The answer is because this moment is a bellwether for the future of humanity. What is at stake is nothing less than personal freedom and rights granted every human being by our Creator.
There is the potential for either of these realities to prevail. Who doesn’t viscerally feel the yearning for freedom by the Arab youth throughout the Middle Eastern countries manifested through various degrees of uprising? Who doesn’t also feel the violence boiling just below the surface of these uprisings… and the manipulation of those young people by persons with a sinister agenda? Who does not know from human history that absent the presence of Light, darkness multiplies like cancer?
Will the result be harmony or subjugation? Will it end in evolution or devolution? What determines the outcome?
You do.
This is your moment to choose between darkness and Light. This is your moment to join with others of like mind and be heard. This is your chance to put fear to rest and break through the illusion of terror in order to show others who are less certain, the way. This is your appointment with destiny.
You have always had this much power. Â Never before have you been this close to a full awareness of that fact combined with the Will to act upon it.
The future of the world will literally be created this day by your choice and made manifest by your voice. You are the answer. Now is the time.
It has been set before you this day.
