Republicans On The Run
I’m writing this post at the same time I’m watching the Tea Party Presidential debate on CNN. I had to write now because I am concerned that if I don’t express my feelings in the very moment that I’m experiencing them, time may diminish the power of my ability to communicate them to you.
These seven men (Romney, Perry, Santorum, Gingrich, Cane, Huntsman, Paul) and one woman (Bachman) are intelligent, articulate, and impassioned. That’s nice, but not as important as the fact that I think they are, overall, telling us the truth. Even though its not pretty. And while we have tuned in to hear the questions they are asked, and the answers they provide, I think the greater question is “Do we really want to hear the truth?” Or, are we guilty of the accusation Jack Nicholson made to Tom Cruise in the movie “A Few Good Men” when he said, “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!”
Can you? Can we?
Because the truth means that each of us has to take personal responsibility for how we got to where we are and personal responsibility for what we do in our own lives in getting us out of here. It means re-prioritizing our values, reallocating our time, renewing our commitment to personal integrity, and remembering that we are… above all… in this together.
Leadership starts with us but it doesn’t end there. If we are ready to meet those demands and standards in our own lives then we will get the leadership we deserve. However, if we want the bumper sticker promise and the quick fix we will not only get more of the same, we will meet the real enemy and have found it to be us.
I can handle the truth. Can you?
Krauthammer and Krugman on 9/11
Paul Krugman is an American economist, Princeton University professor and Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics recipient. Charles Krauthammer is a Pulitizer prize-winning syndicated columnist, political commentator, and physician. Two very bright men. One of them wrote a factually researched, well-substantiated, thought provoking column on the tenth year anniversary of the terrorist attacks perpetrated on September 11, 2001. The other threw a schoolyard bully’s punch and then left the playground before anyone else could respond.
The former was Charles Krauthammer.  The latter, Paul Krugman, tempts me to give his “column†no time at all. However, in Mr. Krugman’s judgmental name calling and accusations, he teaches us much about what’s wrong with the world and why we have found ourselves so far from who we want to be.
Mr. Krauthammer’s column in the National Review On-line recaps the U.S. response and successes in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He also factually disproves allegations that the War on Terror is the basis for our current financial difficulties and places the blame where it belongs. Finally, he gives us pride in our national determination and endurance in the face of adversity.
As for Mr. Krugman… he used his bully pulpit to bully. He accused former President George W. Bush and former New York Mayor Rudy Guilaini of “cash[ing] in on the horror†and unnamed others of “hijacking [of] the atrocity.†He actually goes so far as to call the memory of 9/11 “an occasion of shame.†Mr. Krugman’s opinion piece is a lesson in turning the victim into the perpetrator… in deflecting responsibility from where it rightfully belongs. He offers no facts, piously judges others, and tries to make us feel badly about ourselves as a nation. Let’s learn from his mistakes.
1. Conclusions should be based upon facts, not conjecture.
2. Judgment belongs to Our Creator and when exercised by humankind separates and alienates us from ourselves and one another.
3. Giving others confidence and hope, not criticism and despair, is the answer to both personal and collective growth.
Mr. Krauthammer’s column allows for posting comments. Mr. Krugman’s does not. Deliberately so. He noted that he was not permitting comments “for obvious reasons.†What is obvious to me may be different from what he intended. I post here the email I sent him following a read of his column:
“If you are going to make the kind of judgments and bold statements made in the NY Times Opinion piece ‘The Years of Shame,’ have the courage to allow those who see the world differently from you the courtesy of access to reply. Free speech, I presume, is one of the founding principles upon which we can agree. What follows that principle in a free society is the battlefield of ideas.
The only thing that is ‘obvious’ about why you would have precluded responses to the piece is your need to strike while insulating yourself from the counter-punch. This was not a courageous act. Being able to take the heat, not just give it, is the sign of a confident individual committed to, above all, the truth.â€
Who Is Howard Schultz?
Howard Schultz is brilliant and courageous.Â
Don’t know who he is, you say? Read on.
Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz, recently suggested that we suspend all contributions to political candidates and politicians generally until they address the deficit and begin to do the People’s business for which they are elected. His suggestion has taken root. Just today, both Duncan Niederauer, head of the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ CEO Bob Greifeld have joined in support and are encouraging other CEO’s to do the same.
If you’re not a CEO don’t fret. I’m not and I’m on board because I know a good idea when I hear one.
For too long, and too often, we’ve allowed ourselves to feel powerless to affect issues that seem way beyond the capability of one individual. But one individual can, in fact, turn the world upside down or right side up… depending on their intention. Think Hitler and Jesus Christ.
Your thinking “extraordinary examples†aren’t you? Well, maybe… but you get my point.
Perhaps more to the point, and more relevant to what you can do, is this:
1.      We are all connected, and the action of one of us inevitably influences the outcome for all of us. It’s like the butterfly flapping its wings in New York City whose motion ultimately affects wind patterns in China.
2.      You vote every four (or six) years at the ballot box. However, you vote every day with your money. Money is energy. Where you choose to spend (or not spend) yours is an act of self-definition.
I think Howard Schultz has exhibited leadership at a time when we are in search of such talent. He’s done his part. Now it’s up to all of us who know a good idea when we hear one to do our part.
If memory serves me correctly, President Obama was very proud of his grassroots, social network-based campaign approach that managed to collect millions of dollars from “ordinary citizens†who were moved by his promise of Hope and Change and, who by their individual contributions, made the difference.
See, you matter.  Your money is an expression of what you are willing to support. Withdraw that support now!  Make your contribution (no pun intended) in support of Howard Schultz’s idea.  Say “no more funding†for alleged leaders, of any and all parties, whose word means nothing and who exhibit both a lack of understanding for the People’s will and an unwillingness to perform the job for which they applied.
Just do it. You’ll feel empowered and together… real change is possible.
Prosper During Change
As if there were not already enough “chaos†to deal with… London is in flames. That’s the bad news. From here on out…it gets optimistic. Really.
Let’s start with chaos. Chaos is not a bad state of being. It’s merely an as yet unrecognized pattern. What that means is that when we go through change (something we do more than anything else in or lives) there is always a period when we’ve move out of the familiar but are not yet fully into the new pattern. It’s that “momentâ€, as we walk into the unknown, there is a feeling of uncertainty and resistance as we re-familiarize ourselves with what’s new and  reestablish our footing, so to speak.
That’s where we are, globally. It’s actually the “Change†of “Hope and Change†that so many asked for and got. They just got it in the way the Universe thought it would be best… which turns out to be somewhat different than what was sought.
Which is where the expression “Be careful what you ask for because you’re liable to get it†comes from.
What we wanted was change without stress. Well, change doesn’t cause stress. Resistance to change causes stress. So what we really wanted was change without any disruption to how we do things and what we have.
That was kind of juvenile… don’t you think?
As for London… less than 1% of the population is causing the destruction and violence. This is important to note because to make changes in a society or situation, statistically it takes about 10% of the total population. So, if 1% of the population can cause such disruption and harm… imagine what just 10% of us can do, globally, in support of peace.
Let me leave you with these two conclusions.
1.       Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Change requires that and if you do, change will come more quickly with less stress.
2.       Become part of the 10%.
Oh yes, keep breathing and smiling. That helps too.
Debt Ceiling or Phoenix Rising?
As our elected officials continue to struggle with the futility of attempting to apply depleted energies to problem solving rather than embracing spiritually-based, co-creative thinking…each of us must hold onto the core belief that we can directly influence the outcome of unfolding events by how we think, speak and act individually.
It’s my favorite saying: “There is only One of Usâ€
Once you surrender to this concept, choices become clearer.
“Surrender†being the operative word here.
Generally, we are pretty adept at seeking a higher power. It’s surrendering to it when we encounter it that trips us up.  It’s one thing to yearn. Many of us do that in our personal lives. We yearn for relationship…we yearn for a partner…we yearn for love. Then, when we find those things, we spend the rest of our lives resisting surrender to the very thing we sought and, miraculously, found.
We are no different when in search of a Higher Power. Of Source.  Of God.  Of The God Within. We seek and yearn and explore all sorts of avenues to find that connection that will bring us inner peace and give our lives profound meaning. Then, on those occasions when we get a glimpse of such Power, we manufacture all sorts of reasons why it cannot possibly be as we experienced it (a/k/a/ denial) …or… why it just makes more sense to go on our merry way living life as we always have (a/k/a ego- directed).  And so we wind up back where we started and the merry way of the merry-go-round goes… yes…’round and ‘round.
How do we get off this ride?
Surrender!
Surrender does not mean relinquish your individuality. Nor does it mean relinquish power (with a small “pâ€) over creating your best life. Surrender means letting go attachments and outcomes. Instead, leaning to accept and receive what life brings you in each and every moment with certainty that whatever that may be it holds the potential for your highest good. The key to getting there is being fully conscious and fully aware in the present moment so that you can access inner guidance to handle that which is in front of you.
You’d be pleasantly surprised at what you can know when you are present and aware. Knowing is certainty… and certainty creates reality.
So while the politicians fiddle as Rome burns… know that The Phoenix rises from the ashes…and so to shall We… All of us because …wait for it…
There is only One of Us.
Obama, Boehner, and Pelosi Pics
It isn’t that I think that our Representatives…The President, Senators and Congressman… should never be able to smile or enjoy themselves.  It’s just that while unemployment is at 9.2%, 31% of the houses are underwater (the value of the house is less than the outstanding mortgage), and the world is holding its breath awaiting resolution of the U.S. debt ceiling deadline on August 2nd … it’s sort of disconcerting, if not at times infuriating, to see photos on the nightly news, or on major news websites, of all of them sitting in some situation room in the White House smiling.
You know that “good time†I think they are all entitled to …well this isn’t it. And those photos just make me think about how they all have jobs and houses that are not under water…which makes me think they still don’t get it.
How is that possible?
You and I know how difficult and uncertain the economy is. You and I know the future looks fraught with all sorts of problems we definitely didn’t anticipate. You and I know how hard it is each day to care for ourselves and our families…just get through each day, really… while dealing with the stress of worrying about where all of this is headed and what’s in store for us when we get there.
I think it’s possible because they do not, in fact, get it.  And even if they do, they are clearly clueless about what to do about it. Their time is up.
We are headed into new and uncharted territory.  So it’s up to the explorer in each of us to blaze new trails of innovative thinking in our own lives. All change starts with the individual, an individual, actually. That individual may be you…or it could be the child who is watching how you handle change and its accompanying uncertainty.
So as we’re blazing new trails, let’s make two course corrections that our political leaders seem unable to make. First, let’s tell the truth. Always. To ourselves and others no matter how painful. Second, let’s accept responsibility for the seriousness of the situation in which we find ourselves and, if we’re caught smiling on the job, let it be because we’ve figured out how to get ourselves out of this mess.
Is Capitalism Evil?
The key to living well is balance. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about personal nutrition or the economy. Hydration is good… but even too much water can kill you.  Capitalism is good… but greed and excessive materialism can kill a society.
Beware of extremes for they are found at the dead end of roads leading to destruction.
Having said that, and not to mix metaphors, the voices clamoring for the end of capitalism are mistakenly trying to throw the baby out with the bath water.  It isn’t capitalism that has brought us to the economic morass in which we now find ourselves. Capitalism, like the internet and guns, is content neutral. By that I mean none of those have any effect until humans decide how to use and/or apply them.
It has been the evolution of capitalism, lacking necessary ethical and moral underpinnings, that has caused the system to rampage so out of balance as to bring the Republic to the brink of economic collapse. The insatiable and unchecked desire to acquire more money, power and material possessions has fueled the engine of unlimited spending and the corresponding accumulation of obscene debt.
It’s a critical moment. The knee-jerk reaction is to blame the system rather than examine the motives and actions of the people who ran it. To do the latter means to take a long, hard look at ourselves, our priorities and what we value.  To not take such a look, and thereby bring the system back into balance, is to abdicate responsibility for the inevitable and tragic end to the most remarkable experiment in personal liberty and freedom ever attempted on planet Earth.
A Republic such as that established by the U.S. Constitution combined with free market enterprise is a brilliant construct if accompanied, and therefore balanced, by such values as compassion, integrity, moderation, charity and personal responsibility.
Without that balance, the abyss is but a few steps away from where we now stand.
In your own life, immediately take charge of your personal decisions and re-balance your priorities. Â Reevaluate what you value and be determined to stand up for those things you know to originate from your highest self.
At some point in that process, when enough of us take this approach, we will reach the tipping point that establishes a more holistic and supportive existence… and escape the need to destroy all that is good for lack of balance.
Intentional Mortgage Defaults: Right or Wrong?
Today, Conservative talk radio host Mike Gallagher posed the question of whether it was right or wrong for people to deliberately default on their mortgages simply because the value of the house had decreased since purchase, and was now “underwaterâ€â€¦ meaning the outstanding mortgage balance is greater than the market value of the house. Mr. Gallagher made it known at the outset that he thought it was ethically and legally wrong to do so.
A horrified, and truly shocked, Mr. Gallagher discovered that 99% of his callers disagreed with him. Putting forth various reasons and rationales (some might say “justificationsâ€) the callers saw nothing wrong with deliberate default.
While I may be as dismayed as Mr. Gallagher, I am not shocked.
When people have been frustrated, lied to and make to feel powerless long enough, anger and vengefulness become the retaliatory means of choice. Add to this almost an entire generation bent on materialism at the expense of ethics, values and spirituality and you’ve got a recipe for disaster… and perhaps violent revolution.
Such is the precipice upon which we as a nation now gaze.
I have no desire or intention to laud people who knowingly and willingly violate the law. After all, I’m a former lawyer. However, because I will not condone such behavior doesn’t mean I don’t understand it.
When Ivan Boesky told a Stanford graduating class in1987 that “Greed is good†he started (or significantly accelerated) the downward slide towards an abyss we are rapidly approaching. You simply cannot make materialism, acquisition and power your sole benchmarks for success without destroying all that is good in humanity.
We are not human beings. The term connotes a noun…a static thing. We are, instead “Being humanâ€â€¦ constantly in a state of change and evolution. As such, we are known by our choices. We are known by how we choose to Be human. If our choices are no more complex than to satisfy our every material and carnal need with total disregard for others, or the long term effect of our behavior, then we wind up where we are: Ruled (not led) by leaders and institutions that have been corrupted by default as we failed to concern ourselves with who they really were or what they really aspired to because we were too busy tending to our own material and carnal needs without giving thought or energy to ethical, moral and spiritual considerations.
Are we too late? No.
Not if you hurry.
Start today.  In your home, in your office, at the supermarket… wherever.  Demand of yourself in every moment honesty, compassion and humility. Leave who you were yesterday behind you for that is, in fact, where it is. You are new today, defined anew by your choices. You have never mattered so much nor have you ever had less time to realize that simple fact.
Is it wrong to deliberately default on your mortgage? Yes.
Do we understand the frustration and anger? Yes.
Are those people crying out from frustration and anger? Yes.
Is there an irreversible storm on the horizon? Maybe
Can you do something to turn it around? Yes.
Will you? ____.
I Set Before You This Day
Sometimes there’s just no way around the tough stuff. While I realize my credibility will take a hit with the following statement, I none-the-less feel compelled to make it.
You are living in two simultaneous realities. Both are quite real.
In Reality Number One, the world is experiencing unprecedented and widespread change. Social unrest and faltering economies are breaking down and reorganizing for the good of all involved, even if the transition period is fraught with difficulty and endless challenges.  The outcome, however, is a proverbial giant step for humankind.
In Reality Number Two, the world is experiencing unprecedented and widespread change. Social unrest and faltering economies have created a dangerous global environment wherein opportunists, both political and economic, are exerting every effort, and seeking every means, to meld excessive governmental power to personal financial gain for the few at the expense of the many. The outcome will be the destruction of the world as you have known it.
How can this be? How can both be happening at the same time?
The answer is because this moment is a bellwether for the future of humanity. What is at stake is nothing less than personal freedom and rights granted every human being by our Creator.
There is the potential for either of these realities to prevail. Who doesn’t viscerally feel the yearning for freedom by the Arab youth throughout the Middle Eastern countries manifested through various degrees of uprising? Who doesn’t also feel the violence boiling just below the surface of these uprisings… and the manipulation of those young people by persons with a sinister agenda? Who does not know from human history that absent the presence of Light, darkness multiplies like cancer?
Will the result be harmony or subjugation? Will it end in evolution or devolution? What determines the outcome?
You do.
This is your moment to choose between darkness and Light. This is your moment to join with others of like mind and be heard. This is your chance to put fear to rest and break through the illusion of terror in order to show others who are less certain, the way. This is your appointment with destiny.
You have always had this much power. Â Never before have you been this close to a full awareness of that fact combined with the Will to act upon it.
The future of the world will literally be created this day by your choice and made manifest by your voice. You are the answer. Now is the time.
It has been set before you this day.
How You Can Lower Fuel Prices
Fundamentally, everything in the physical world is made up of energy. Life is all about managing that energy. Now if you believe that we create our reality with our thoughts, then it would make perfect sense that we find ourselves in the middle of a global energy crisis!
To wit:Â Just today, Goldman-Sachs is predicting $5.00 a gallon gas by mid-summer.
So what does managing personal energy have to do with a global energy crisis? Well, while we tend to focus only on external conditions… such as OPEC’s control and manipulation of oil prices… or the lack of sufficient renewable or affordable energy… what if you and I are actually the cause of the energy crisis? What if you and I fail to properly manage our own internal energy we then collectively, though our combined thinking, create a literal global energy crisis?
How?
Well, there are only two emotions: Love and Fear. We are frightened and controlled by fear every minute of every day by the media and, too often, by our religious beliefs. What if widespread fear is a reflection of the misuse of individual energy? And what if enough individual misuse combines to manifest as…wait for it…the global energy crisis?
What to do?
Immediately and permanently, dismiss fearful thinking. Focus on loving thoughts… on what’s right with your life…on what you have to be grateful for…on the best of humankind.
If enough of us move from Fear to Love we may just find, for example, fuel prices coming down… and that could just be the first step in turning around not only the global energy crisis but a great deal more about our world that is created and controlled by fear.
